Commercial trucking insurance provides protection for any business-owned or leased truck. Policies usually include collision and damage coverage as well as coverage for property and personal damage to others. Just like you need auto insurance for your own car, you need trucking insurance to cover your business-owned or leased vehicles. If you or any of your employees have an accident in your business's truck, you may be liable for bodily injuries, lost wages, loss of the good transported or any damage caused.
Common factors to assess commercial trucking insurance premiums:
Age
Experience
Employment
Driving Record
Accidents
Number of Years Company Has Been in Operation
Area of Travel
Commodities Hauled
Equipment Being Operated
Deductibles
Department of Transportation (DOT) Compliance
Safety Program Participation
Typical coverage includes:
1. NON-TRUCKING LIABILITY, (NTL) INSURANCE - Provides liability coverage when the truck is being used for purposes outside the scope of the lease and not under dispatch. For example, using the truck on weekends to run errands for your family.
2. PRIMARY LIABILITY INSURANCE- Every trucker / trucking company who operates under their own authority is required to carry primary liability coverage on all owned units and usually also provide this owner / operator insurance for their leased vehicles.
3. CARGO INSURANCE - Provides coverage for loss or damage to the property a truck is transporting (the load).
4. PHYSICAL DAMAGE INSURANCE - Provides coverage for repair or replacement for damage resulting from a covered loss (collision, fire, theft, hail, windstorm, earthquake, flood, mischief, or vandalism) to owned vehicles.
5. OCCUPATIONAL ACCIDENT INSURANCE – Insurance for owner / operators in the trucking industry. In most states, self-employed owner/operators can opt-out of state mandated workers compensation coverage. While not the same as workers compensation, this insurance is similar in scope and intent. Most motor carriers require their leased operators to be covered either by workers compensation or occupational accident insurance at the leased operator's expense.
